Al Quaraouiyine University, founded in 859, is regarded as the oldest institution of higher learning still in operation.

March to May and September to November. Summer is hot and dry, winter cool and damp.
It is not compulsory, but the medina has several thousand lanes and an official guide saves a great deal of time on a first visit.
Fez is older, denser and more given over to craft and history. Marrakesh is more open, better served, and closer to the Atlas and the desert. A seven-day route takes in both.
